The COSMIC Model
At Polaris schools, we use the COSMIC model – a relational and trauma-informed approach to supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs, neurodivergence, developmental trauma, and other complex experiences.
COSMIC stands for Child-Oriented Systemic Mentalisation with Integrative Communication. It’s more than a framework – it shapes the ethos of our schools and underpins how we relate, communicate, and support one another every day.
We understand that many of the children we support approach relationships differently. These differences are often shaped by their life experiences or how they naturally relate to the world. Rather than seeing these differences as problems to fix, we view them as part of each child’s unique way of being and we respond with empathy, curiosity and respect.
What makes COSMIC unique?
- It recognises that trust and connection must be built intentionally, not assumed.
- It supports staff to meet children where they are, adapting relationally and developmentally.
- It equips staff with practical tools, language and strategies from psychology, therapy and education.
- It focuses on nurturing existing relationships rather than introducing multiple new professionals.
- It helps make the invisible work of building relationships visible, conscious and purposeful.
COSMIC also supports staff to:
- Develop their own relational awareness and reflective capacity.
- Consider the child in the context of their ‘constellation’ of relationships – their personal COSMOS.
- Understand how each child’s environment impacts the way they learn, relate, and grow.
This approach helps create a strong sense of belonging, safety, and self-worth — supporting each child not just academically, but emotionally and socially too.
